"The nasty little secret is that in some states, government dependence enables you to get a free cell phone with 200 free minutes a month too. That’s right: in Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Tennessee, and Virginia, if you are food stamp dependent you can get a cell phone for free. This awkward (and obvious) confusion of needs and wants only highlights the ugliness of government dependence."

Does Barack Obama want to be re-elected in 2012?
"Few Americans consider themselves bigger than the presidency but Obama might be one of them. The man in the Oval Office, argues Toby Harnden, may already be preparing for a role as a post-president in a post-American world."

Scratch Gingrich in 2012: Newt Backs Out of 9/11 Rally Against Ground Zero Mosque
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) will not be addressing a protest of the proposed mosque in lower Manhattan on the anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
The organizers of the rally, Stop Islamization of America and Freedom Defense Initiative, announced Gingrich as one of the event’s confirmed speakers on the Web last weekend. . . .
[A] spokesman for Gingrich, a possible 2012 presidential candidate, told The Hill that the former leader of the House had never confirmed his appearance. Instead, one of Gingrich’s staff had agreed to send a video message from him to be shown at the Sept. 11 rally.
That has since been canceled. . . .
[The spokesman] did not comment on why Gingrich was no longer planning to send a video message to the rally . . .

Free speech? Obama song gets coach fired
America... the land of the free and the home of the brave. At least that's what we hear when we sing the National Anthem. Wait... are we still allowed to sing that song and express our patriotism? I know we are still the home of the brave, but it's become clearer that we are no longer the land of the free. Just ask "former" middle school football coach Bryan Glover, who wrote a song about Barack Obama and sent it to people on his e-mail list. Where did this expression of free speech land him? The unemployment line, that's where.

2010 Sets Record for Cost of Government
Written By: Mattie Corrao

Publication date: 08/18/2010
Publisher: The Heartland Institute
The average American worker had to toil through the first 231 days of 2010—more than 63 percent of the year—to pay off the costs of their state, local, and federal governments. This leaves just under four and half months for Americans to provide for themselves and their families before the growing tab of the cost of government comes due again.

An Open Letter To President Obama
In today's dangerous world, we need a president with experience, leadership and courage. Unfortunately, you have shown us little of those traits.
Your childhood and younger years denied you the opportunity to grow up as an American man, and that is no fault of your own. Unfortunately, your lack of empathy for and experience of a traditional American upbringing has left you out of touch with those of us who grew up learning the traditions and work ethic of our predecessors.

Privatizing marriage: a Libertarian solution
The argument over gay marriage, like many arguments in America, has been falsely presented as a single, binary issue: one is either for or against legalizing gay marriage....instead of legalizing gay marriage, what if each state de-legalizedstraight marriage? Why after all, should the state define what many consider to be a private, religious question?

Mexican officials don't want more Mexicans
A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on Tuesday to say Arizona's new employer sanctions law will have a devastating effect on the Mexican state.
At a news conference, the legislators said Sonora - Arizona's southern neighbor, made up of mostly small towns - cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools it will face as illegal Mexican workers here return to their hometowns without jobs or money.

Federal Coked-up Monkey Study stimulates jobs
Republicans critique jobs stimulus program — monkey studies and all
Those stingy Republicans have issued another lame attack on what they call "wasteful spending" in President Barack Obama's $863 billion job stimulus program. In their so-called "report," U.S. Sens. John McCain and Tom Coburn listed 100 instances of what they claim to be government "waste" and "abuse."
These include vital federal projects, like that $89,298 sidewalk in Boynton, Okla. Sure, it doesn't run past a home or business, and yes, it does end in a ditch. But it's extremely smooth.
And that nearly $800,000 program so a Georgia Tech University assistant music professor can hang out with world-renowned musicians and "jam" with them? Can't you dig it?
